Goat cheese

Bálint Szabó produces his goat cheese 8 km from Lake Balaton at the entrance of the Nivegy valley in Óbudavár. The ex-Hungarian literature teacher became a farmer in November 2007 by starting with 3 goats, now having 70 goats on the farm. The animals are milked by machine, with a daily yield of 100-110 litres. Creamcheese, gomolya, cured cheese, cheese with red culture and white mold is also produced. Fresh cheeses primarily are flavoured, spices come from Tihanyi Abbey.

It is important for the family to work with local ingredients and to protect the environment. No chemicals, soil fertilizers are used, nor do the goats receive any milk yield boosters.

Products are sold at the Tihanyi Market Plage, the Balatonfüredi BioBalaton Market and locally in Csala at the Local Farmers’ Market. Besides in Házikó products, the family’s goat cheese can be tasted in several Budapest restaurants: Castro Bistro, Code Zero and Budapest Bagel.
