Mazug László
Fruits
László began to cultivate a smaller, about 1.000 m2 fruit and vineyard area in Zsámbék in 1993 .The love of the land and the knowledge and practices he had learned from his father, who now at age 80 is now only helping with advices.
By turning back the profit year by year, László own nowadays 3 hectares with about 2000 trees. He is no longer interested getting larger territory, because this is the perfectly sized area: cultivation and harvesting of the fruits can be executed by a family and a few seasonal employees. László claims proudly that he knows every tree on the 300 m high ‘Nyakas’ hill plantation. The high lime content in the soil makes it rich in minerals, this is why the fruits grown here are very tasty. László said it is no accident that the area and the peach grown here has a 100 years old high reputation in the markets of Budapest, and that in their oldest orchard some peach trees planted before the war are still standing. The fruit season begins in May with cherries and sour cherries, then apricots and peaches are ripening – they make up more than half of the plantations -, later plums, summer and autumn apples, pears, grapes are closing the season.
The Mazug family picks fresh fruits every day and brings them on the coming day to the farmers’ market at Hunyadi square in Budapest or sell them in Zsámbék. The variety of fruit trees was intentionally selected to provide fresh fruits from May to November. Since a few years theyalso process the fruits and make juices and jams.
